Introduction
The growing deterioration of peace and stability in the Gulf of Guinea is evidenced by the recent surge in incidents of violent extremism, conflicts, transnational organized criminality, maritime piracy, drug trafficking, and political violence. Ghana, recognized as a beacon of democracy in Africa is not immune to these threats. The prevalence of hate speech, disinformation/misinformation and other indecent forms of expression especially through social media platforms can serve as a catalyst for hatred, incitement, violent conflicts and violent extremism. In the current media landscape, the rise of hate speech, misinformation, and disinformation poses significant challenges to social cohesion and peace. These issues are particularly pronounced in regions prone to conflict, where false information can fuel violence and discord among communities. Journalists and online bloggers play a critical role in shaping public opinion and must be equipped with the skills to navigate these challenges responsibly.
