Introduction
UNDP Viet Nam is looking for 01 qualified consultancy firm/institute/organization for a Baseline assessment of plastic pollution within the tourism sector in Viet Nam.
Plastic pollution is an emerging challenge in Viet Nam in recent years, with an accumulation of plastic waste generated of 2.9 – 3.7 million tons annually from various sectors[1]. However, nearly a half of this is still mismanaged and unmanaged, causing severe impacts on the ecosystems, economy and other services, including tourism. Specifically, marine plastic litter has adversely impacted aquaculture, fishing, and coastal tourism by degrading marine environments and reducing economic value. Activities such as coral diving, snorkelling, and wildlife observation have been disrupted by plastic waste, which often covers coral reefs, diminishes their aesthetic appeal, and introduces harmful pathogens. The resulting degradation of coral ecosystems has led to a decline in tourist arrivals and local tourism revenue[2].

UNDP Viet Nam is seeking a National Firm (the firm) to conduct a baseline assessment of plastic pollution in the country’s tourism sector. This assessment aims to provide key insights into the current state of plastic waste and pollution, identify relevant stakeholders, and offer recommendations to support the transition towards plastic-free tourism in selected locations across Viet Nam.
The firm will conduct the baseline assessment, in Ninh Binh and Da Nang provinces, in alignment with the national and local guidance to understand the aspects in the tourism sector, including:
· Key plastic consumption and plastic waste generation in local tourism industry and mapping of stakeholders involved;
· Current status of solid waste plastic waste collection, sorting, treatment in tourism activities;
· Recognition of plastic pollution at touristic sites, with initial assessment of plastic waste composition in selected sites to inform a broader understanding.
· Relevant national and local policy frameworks and any enabling factors within the tourism sector in Ninh Binh and Da Nang provinces
